A Tribute to Mr. Ahern

I have long been a fan of Mr. Andre Ahern and have religiously read his newsletters for years.  It was with much sadness I heard of his passing last week, which disturbed my greatly due to the fact that he was murdered.  He will be greatly missed by many.

About Ahern & Associates Transportation Consulting Firm:  (from their web site http://www.ahern-ltd.com/about/)

Ahern and Associates is North America’s leading trucking and transportation management consulting firm. The skilled consultants at Ahern and Associates specialize in mergers and acquisitions of trucking companies and logistics companies as well as the restructuring and evaluation of existing carriers that seek to increase operating efficiency and improve profitability. Since 1987, Ahern and Associates has aided hundreds of buyers in the acquisition of trucking and logistics companies throughout the U.S. and Canada as well as assisting many transportation and logistics companies in reducing their overall operating costs and increasing their profitability.

Mr. Ahern was one of the smartest men in our profession and regularly dispensed “good old common sense”.

He was very practical in his research and  observations.  I admired him because he did not complain about the pressures placed on the transportation industry: from taxes to law suits to health care rulings, etc.  Rather, he informed us of how things really were so you could find a way to deal with it.  He spoke of Ethics and Integrity and practiced them too.  He cautioned us about procrastination and encouraged networking.   There is still much to learn from Mr. Ahern and his teachings.  I would encourage anyone in our industry to read and re-read his newsletters for valuable insight and wisdom.

He always ended his newsletters with a quote of the week that provided much wisdom in a few words.  Here is one of my favorites:

“Never fear failure for failure is the first step towards success” ( Andy Ahern)
